The poster machine was made to challenge the tools that designers conventionally use to make posters. A series of knobs and switches are used by the poster machine operator to alter the mood and layout. Each poster is both handmade and machine-made.
We are Javier Lopez, Luiz Ludwig, and Young Sun Compton, and are working toward MFA degrees in Graphic Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Because graphic design isn’t always comfortable in a gallery, and some of the most interesting things in design happen while making it—the conversations, mess-making, trial and error, and misprints—we set up Seventeen-day Studio to be an exhibition of process. We’re interested in sharing graphic design through the pairing of performance and/as publishing, while also dispelling the myth of solitary genius by collaboration.
